Conflict-related sexual violence is heinous crime: Peace Minister Dhakal the universal times
KATHMANDU, June 29: Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ek Nath Dhakal has said that conflict-related sexual violence is heinous crime. Minister Dhakal was speaking at a program organized by the United Nations to mark the commemoration of the day on the elimination of sexual violence in conflict. “My heart goes out to all the victims, especially those of sexual violence, and my gratitude to those who have devoted their lives for the eradication of such heinous crimes in the midst of conflict” said the Minister. Minister Dhakal explained that Nepal Government is fully aware of the traumatic issues that were part of insurgency, including people who were displaced or disappeared, those with physical disabilities, as well as emotional resentment and mental trauma. “One of the most disgraceful and serious matters relates to sexual violence. I condemn all kinds of sexual violence and especially when such incidences are against defenseless women during periods of conflict. These crimes are serious human rights violations” Minister stated. Minister Dhakal assured his total support to provide proper justice to the victims of conflict related sexual violence. Minister Dhakal explained government’s plan to implement resolution 1325 and 1820, relating to the protection of women and to maintain the peace and security within the country. He further clarified that 2nd phase of National Action Plan (NAP) of government will focus on addressing the needs to the victims of conflict-related sexual violence. These needs include: the access to justice, the end of impunity, reparationsalong with other support and rehabilitation services. Minister Dhakal advised to be aware of the possible effects and handle such cases in a sensitive and responsible manner”. Country Director of UNDP Nepal Renaud Meyer, CEDAW committee member Bandana Rana, UN Women representative Ziad Sheikh, UNFPA representative Giulia Vallelse, Transitional Justice Centre director D. Christopher Decker are among other speakers.
